Xcel Energy is advancing a bill designed to protect its investors from the unpredictable costs of nuclear power – and instead shift that risk to you.

The bill (SF 3504/HF 3708) would allow Xcel to charge customers for new nuclear plant costs without the usual cost controls and checks on spending that currently protect consumers of for-profit utility companies. Xcel says it will spend at least $1.4 billion, but its last nuclear upgrade was mismanaged and ran over budget by more than double.

Consumer groups like the Citizens Utility Board and AARP, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, representatives of large industry, and environmental advocates all oppose this legislation.

There's no rush to pass a bill this year without understanding how it will increase the cost of electricity for Xcel's customers.

Please contact decision makers and ask them to oppose SF 3504/HF 3708.
